ALAS Fogging Samples, 2003 Expeditions
Three canopy fogging samples were taken during the expeditions. The methods and equipment were the same as those used for earlier fogging samples at La Selva (see La Selva fogging methods). The three fogging events were carried out in the patch of forest just south and uphill from the El Ceibo station, on the west bank of the Rio Peje.
The first sample was taken on 16 Feb 2003. The plot contained several trees of various sizes, and parts of the canopy contained dense vine tangles. There was no single dominant tree and much of the canopy was relatively short statured, to about 20m. Fogging began at 5:30am and funnels were harvested after a 2-hour drop time. The morning was without rain. Danilo Brenes operated the fogger.
The second sample was taken on 17 Mar 2003. Funnels were placed beneath the crown of a single large tree. Fogging was done from the lower branches of the crown, and then additional fogging was done from the ground. Fogging began at 5:30am and funnels were harvested after a 2-hour drop time. The morning was without rain and the day was sunny. Ronald Vargas operated the fogger.
The third sample was taken on 12 Apr 2003. Funnels were placed beneath the crown of a single large Stryphnodendron excelsum (Fabaceae) tree. Fogging was done from the lower branches of the crown, and then additional fogging was done from the ground. Fogging began at 5:45am and funnels were harvested after a 2-hour drop time. The morning was cloudy and it began to rain a half hour before the funnels were harvested. Ronald Vargas operated the fogger.
Collection codes: the contents of each funnel have a unique code. The "05" indicates that it is from the 500m site, the "F" indicates it is a fogging sample, the following two-digit number is the number of the fogging event (first, second, and third events described above), and the final two-digit number is the individual funnel number.
