Pheidole species known from Costa Rica

Pheidole species names will undoubtedly remain unstable for a while. Many Neotropical species were described from about 1880 to 1920, by Emery and Forel. Alfaro, Tristan, Biolley, and others collected in Costa Rica and sent material to European taxonomists, and thus Costa Rica is the type locality for many Neotropical species. The types reside in European museums and thus there is an inevitable delay in comparing newly delimited species with types.

The species names in the list exhibit varying degrees of reliability. The most reliable names are usually the published names whose type locality is Costa Rica or the adjacent parts of Panama. Published names whose type localities are more distant may be less reliable. E. O. Wilson is carrying out major revisionary work on the genus, and the early parts of this work were done in collaboration with W. L. Brown, Jr. Thus there are many unpublished manuscript names of Wilson and Brown. These are mostly undescribed species, but a few will probably turn out to have prior names. The species given a code number of the form "JTL-000" are newly delimited species whose status as new versus previously described is unknown (see discussion of names).
