Comments

Examination of holotype queen, 28 January 2006:

This is a sister taxon to M. cooperi. It shares many features but seems to be a less derived version. Antenna 10-segmented; maxillary palpus appears 6-segmented (base of palpus not visible on holotype, but judging from exposed segments); mandible subfalcate, less strongly falcate than cooperi, but without differentiated basal and masticatory margins; surface of mandible coarsely punctatorugose; labrum partially visible on holotype, expansive, smooth and shining, extending down over buccal cavity between mandibles, possibly covering entire buccal cavity like cooperi, but apex of labrum not visible; clypeus shallowly convex, not strongly produced like cooperi; head sharply rectangular but not as elongate as cooperi; head thicker in lateral view, not as dorsoventrally compressed as cooperi; mesosoma and metasoma small relative to head, like cooperi and not like typical Myrmelachista; petiole elongate, identical to cooperi; entire surface smooth and shiny, highly polished, like cooperi; mandible, clypeus, posterior margin of vertex, middle and hind legs, all surfaces of petiole covered with dense, short, white setae; setae sparse elsewhere; color black.
