Key to Costa Rican Ectatomma

This key is based in part on Kugler and Brown (1982).

There are four species of Ectatomma in Costa Rica. They can be distinguished using the following two figures.

ruidum, gibbum, and edentatum are dark red brown to black; tuberculatum is orange. The petiolar node of ruidum is narrow in side view, with anterior and posterior faces nearly parallel; those of gibbum and edentatum are thicker toward the base, with anterior and posterior faces less parallel.

ruidum and gibbum have a prominent median eminence on the pronotum, and distinct humeral angles or teeth; on edentatum these are greatly reduced. In face view, the posterior margin of the head is relatively flat on ruidum, rounded on gibbum.
