Range
Brazil (type locality), Costa Rica. Costa Rica: Wilson Botanical Garden.
Identification
Mandibles with 5 teeth; preocular carina curving mesad toward frontal carina; antennal scrobe poorly defined; lateral vertex margins forming blunt angles, not produced as acute teeth; pronotum lacking median tubercles.
Natural History
In Costa Rica I know this species from a single worker obtained in a Winkler sample. The sample was taken on the forested ridge across the Rio Jaba from Wilson Botanical Gardens, a 1200m elevation site in southern Costa Rica.
Comments
This isolated specimen shares diagnostic characters with the South American peltatus, but differs from the common C. rimosus only in the absence of the median pronotal tubercles. It remains to be seen whether this specimen is just a local variant of C. rimosus or really has some phylogeographic connection to C. peltatus.
