Costa Rica: Atlantic slope.
Identification
Face punctate, with 2-3 short stiff erect setae on the face; postpetiole bilobed; mesonotum hump-shaped, projecting above pronotum and dorsal face of propodeum; mesonotum with pair of stiff erect setae; first gastral tergum lacking erect setae.
Similar species: distans.
Natural History
This species is known from a few workers from one sweep net sample. The sample was taken by Danilo Brenes as one of the Project ALAS quantitative samples. It was taken during the 2004 expeditions to the 300m site (Cantarrana) on the Barva Transect, in Braulio Carrillo National Park. This is a site with a mosaic of mature wet forest and second growth forest.
Comments
This is part of the Crematogaster distans complex. Character variation is high across the range of the lineage, from south Texas to Argentina, but collections are sparse. This form is very different from the collection of "distans" from La Selva. This form looks like collections from Mexico; the La Selva "distans" looks like collections from South America. The proximity of these two collections suggests discrete sympatric species.
These specimens are nearly identical to the type specimens of C. corvina from Mexico, and other collections of corvina from Mexico and south Texas. The only difference is that specimens of corvina have many stiff setae on the first gastral tergum.
