Range
Costa Rica: Cordillera Volcanica Central (Barva transect, 1500m).
Identification
Minor worker: head length 0.55mm, head width 0.53mm, scape length 0.45mm, Webers length 0.64mm (n=1). Head rounded behind, with medial area flattened; mesonotal suture absent; propodeal spines medium length, erect; face and mesosoma uniformly foveolate, sometimes overlain with faint rugulae; first gastral tergum smooth and shining; dorsal pilosity moderately abundant, medium length, flexuous; color orange.
Major worker: head length 0.92mm, head width 0.92mm, scape length 0.46mm; face largely punctatorugose, sculpture becoming weaker posteriorly; medial area between frontal carinae shiny with subparallel longitudinal rugae; hypostomal margin gently curved; median tooth small to absent; stout lateral teeth about one third distance from midline to recessed teeth flanking mandible bases; dorsal pilosity abundant; head with abundant, long, suberect setae projecting from sides of head in face view; first gastral tergum smooth and shiny.
Similar species: specularis.
Natural History
This species inhabits cloud forest. During ALAS project sampling of the Barva transect it was found at the 1500m site. Workers were found under dead wood in open pasture areas. One worker was also collected in a Winkler sample and one in a pan trap on the ground in forest.
Comments
This is essentially a more robust version of specularis.
