Formicidae, Hymenoptera, Insecta, Arthropoda, Animalia
Range
Colombia (Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta).
Identification
This species is like testacea. It shares with testacea the elongate fourth abdominal segment, parabolic and somewhat pointed posteriorly. The 9-segmented antennae and the clypeal structure are also like testacea. It differs from testacea as follows: propodeal spiracles projecting, with the openings pointing posteriorly (the propodeal spiracles of testacea are more flush with the surface, with openings pointing laterally); the mesosoma is more shorter and more compact; and the general body pubescence is more conspicuous.
Similar species: testacea.
Natural History
Discothyrea are extremely small, cryptobiotic inhabitatants of forest leaf litter (see Genus Overview).
I know this species from a single worker. The locality is Colombia, Dept. Magdalena, 2km NW San Pedro, 10¡55'N 74¡03'W, 1200m. It was in a Winkler sample of sifted leaf litter from a patch of wet forest.
