Acanthoponera is a heteroponerine with: (1) prominent spines on the propodeum; (2) a pronounced posteriorly projecting spine on the petiole; and (3) yellow orange color.
I currently view the Acanthoponera lineage in Costa Rica as a single species with geographic variation. Further treatment is under the single Costa Rican species:
