Costa Rica (Cordillera Volcanica Central).
Identification
Mandible narrow with acute basal tooth, two closely spaced apical teeth, no teeth or denticles between basal and apical teeth; face punctate, sculpture extending onto side and ventral surface of head; anteromedian clypeal margain triangular, protruding; size small; dorsal face of propodeum and petiole smooth and shining.
Natural History
All Simopelta species are nomadic group raiders, convergent with Ecitoninae. See additional information under genus account.
This species is known from two adjacent miniWinkler samples from the forest floor of a montane wet forest site. The two samples were from litter plots 5m apart and thus the specimens are probably all from the same colony. The samples were collected during the Project ALAS expeditions to the 1070m site along the Volcan Barva transect, in 2001.
