Identification
Mandibles with large apical tooth, smaller subapical tooth, and 3-5 irregularly spaced denticles of more or less uniform size; mandibles smooth and shiny; clypeus with weakly depressed median area flanked by two low longitudinal rugae; occipital carina not visible in face view; propodeal suture deeply impressed; propodeum with dorsum longitudinally depressed, the sides of the dorsal face forming two gently rounded ridges which rise anteriorly to form raised bosses at the posterior margin of the propodeal suture; dorsal and posterior faces of propodeum differentiated; ventral margin of petiole with small anterior tooth; ventral margin of postpetiole more or less flat, with faint transverse rugae, and sometimes trace of small anterior tooth; color light to dark red brown; HW 0.51; HL 0.63, SL 0.56; WL 0.82 (n=1).
Range
Widespread in Neotropics from Brazil to Mexico. Costa Rica: throughout the country in the lowlands.
Natural History
This species is known largely from samples of soil and leaf litter from the ground. I have collected workers and queens from Winkler and/or Berlese samples from Hitoy Cerere, La Selva, Rara Avis, Santa Rosa (Bosque humedo), Manuel Antonio, Osa Peninsula.
