worker face view

worker lateral view

Range

Costa Rica: scattered localities.

Identification

Preorbital carina sinuous or straight, extending past eye and directed toward posterolateral vertex margin; in face view with distinct lateral and posterolateral tubercles, such that margins of head behind eye are not rounded; anterior pair of mesonotal spines conical, stout; frontal lobes evenly rounded.

Natural History

I know this species from four collections. At La Selva Biological Station, Eli Sarnat collected it in a rotten log, and a worker was collected in one canopy fogging sample. At Refugio Eladio in Penas Blancas, an 800m site east of Monteverde, I found a nocturnal forager on the ground. I have a worker from Sirena in Corcovado National Park, but no other biological data.

Comments

Mike Kaspari informs me that this species is close to or identical to what he is identifying as T. isthmicus on Barro Colorado Island in Panama.
