worker face view

worker lateral view

Range

Costa Rica: Osa Peninsula and Penas Blancas Valley in Cordillera de Tilaran.

Identification

Preorbital carina sinuous or straight, extending past eye and directed toward posterolateral vertex margin; in face view with distinct lateral and posterolateral tubercles, such that margins of head behind eye are not rounded; anterior pair of mesonotal spines short and blunt; frontal lobes evenly rounded.

Natural History

I know this species from three collections:

A Winkler sample from Refugio Eladio in the Penas Blancas Valley east of Monteverde.

A Winkler sample from Sirena in Corcovado National Park.

A series of workers from San Pedrillo in Corcovado National Park. The workers were carrying insect feces to a nest entrance in the soil. A dirt mound, 10cm across, was adjacent to but separate from the actual, cryptic nest entrance.
