Range

Costa Rica: Atlantic and southern Pacific lowlands.

Identification

Size small; color yellow with darker gaster or uniform yellow; anterior clypeal margin with short projecting teeth; compound eye circular, dark, composed of about 5-8 fused ommatidia; sparse long hairs projecting from sides of head and vertex margin; mesosoma short and compact; postpetiole with anteroventral process.

Similar species: JTL-008.

Natural History

This is an uncommon species at La Selva Biological Station. I know it from a few Berlese samples, and I collected a nest deep in a clay bank near a stream in mature forest. The nest contained a single dealate queen, a few workers, and some brood. I also collected workers at a bait in mature forest at Sirena in Corcovado National Park.

Comments

Very similar to JTL-008, differing in presence of clypeal teeth and ventral postpetiolar tooth.

This species shares some characters with terricola: the general shape of the head, clypeus, and mandibles; the large multifaceted eyes; the long sparse setae.
