Range

Southern USA to Colombia, Jamaica, Brazil (type locality). Costa Rica: Guanacaste lowlands.

Identification

Postpetiole grossly swollen.

Natural History

Solenopsis globularia prefers seasonally dry habitats in Costa Rica. I found a nest under a stone in the oak forest of Santa Rosa National Park, and I found a nest in epiphytic soil on a tree trunk near Lagartos, on the road to Monteverde. These are the only two Costa Rican collections I have seen.
