Range

Costa Rica: Atlantic lowlands, Nicoya Peninsula.

Identification

Minor worker: propodeum very narrow, in cross section tectiform (tent-like, like an inverted "V"), without a distinct angle separating lateral and dorsal faces; WL of typical minor workers around 1.7mm; mesosoma evenly arched in lateral view; mesosoma red brown, lighter on pronotum than on mesonotum and propodeum; gaster with large ivory spots rimmed in brown.

Major worker: note broader shiny gibbosity on face compared to claviscapus.

Similar species: claviscapus.

Natural History

This poorly known species is morphologically very similar to C. claviscapus. It has been collected in two canopy fogging samples from La Selva Biological Station. I also collected workers during a visit to Curu Wildlife Refuge at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. I was collecting at night along the trail that skirts the south side of the estuary. I found a trunk of a large guacimo (Guazuma ulmifolia) tree on which were streaming enormous numbers of Azteca workers. Workers of this Camponotus species were running among the Azteca workers. Could there be a special relationship with Azteca?
