Identification

Minor worker (San Vito specimen): head length 0.64mm, head width 0.60mm, scape length 0.55mm, Webers length 0.81mm (n=1). Head flattened behind, slightly concave medially; eyes small; promesonotal suture weakly impressed, promesonotum forms single somewhat swollen convexity; propodeal spines short, sharp, upturned; clypeus with a few longitudinal rugae; face weakly foveolate, overlain with longtitudinal branching rugae originating just medial to frontal carinae and extending nearly to lateral vertex margins; scapes foveolate; mesosoma generally shining, with faint foveolate-aereolate sculpture near humeral angles, on katepisternum and anepisternum, and on propodeum; dorsum of propodeum more heavily foveolate than sides; first gastral tergum smooth and shining; surface with violaceous reflections in certain light; setae moderately abundant, moderately long, flexuous; color dark brown.

Minor worker (Braulio Carrillo specimen): similar to above but with overall fainter sculpture; face nearly smooth and shining; mesosoma smoother and shinier.

Similar species: cerina, JTL-111.

Range

Costa Rica (San Vito, Braulio Carrillo).

Natural History

Inhabits montane wet forest; has been found in forest floor leaf litter.

Selected Records

This species is known from two specimens.

Costa Rica: San Vito, Las Cruces BS, 8¡47'N 82¡58'W, July 1996, L and A Alonso, MEK54062.04. barcode: MEKOU221500. This specimen was collected as part of Mike Kaspari's Species Energy Theory project, and is currently at the MCZ collection, Harvard.

Costa Rica, Heredia: 17km N Volcan Barba, 10¡17'N, 84¡05'W, 880m, 4-14 Jul 1986 (J. Longino #1382-s). Barcode: INBIOCRI002279585. This specimen was collected from a Winkler sample of sifted leaf litter from the forest floor.
