Range

Costa Rica to Peru. Costa Rica: Atlantic slope rainforest.

Identification

Small black species; mesosomal dorsum setose; no carina between mandible and eye; orifice of propodeal spiracle circular, not slit shaped (note that other species may have a circular boss around the spiracular orifice, but orifice itself is slit-shaped); scapes barely attaining margin of vertex; petiole scale-shaped, tapering dorsally; ventral process of petiole an even convex curve; erect setae projecting from sides of head; dorsal and lateral faces of pronotum continuous, not differentiated; anteromedian margin of clypeus with a short spine.

Natural History

This species inhabits montane forests (Mackay and Mackay 2010). In Costa Rica I know it from two specimens, one from Refugio Eladio at 800m in the Pe–as Blancas Valley, and one from 1070m elevation on the Barva Transect above La Selva. Both were collected in Winkler samples. Mackay and Mackay report it nesting in rotten logs.

Comments

This was a Bill Brown manuscript name, later described in Mackay and Mackay (2010).
