Range
Panama (type locality), Costa Rica.
Identification
Mandibles with 7 teeth, gradually diminishing in size toward base; preocular carina extending all the way back to the vertex margin, forming ventral border of antennal scrobe; propodeum without spines; node of petiole a single convexity, not bidentate; paraclypeal teeth large and spiniform.
Similar species: Cyphomyrmex andersoni.
Natural History
This species inhabits mid-elevation wet forest. The type series is from Cerro Campana in Panama, at 1950m elevation. The types are two workers collected by Bob Anderson in sifted leaf litter. The TEAM project collected a single worker at the 500m site on the Barva Transect in Costa Rica, also from sifted leaf litter. I collected several workers from sifted leaf litter in Pe–as Blancas. These specimens are on loan to Ted Schultz (sent in 2000), but an old image of one of them looks like snellingi, so I am assuming they all are.
