Key to Costa Rican Apterostigma

For measurement definitions and a table of measurements see below key or click here.

10a. Metanotum with pair of longitudinal carinae (may be faint); anterior margin of clypeus slightly truncate or very weakly convex, opaque, lacking thin fringe of smooth cuticle; base of scape abruptly narrowing and curving under frontal lobe, forming angulate juncture where curved portion joins terete main shaft: 20

10b. Metanotum lacking longitudinal carinae; anterior margin of clypeus more convex, with thin fringe of smooth cuticle; base of scape more smoothly tapering to condyle, not forming an angulate juncture with main shaft: 30

20a. Propodeum smoothly rounded, with no trace of propodeal teeth; mesosoma length 1.9-2.3mm: auriculatum

20b. Propodeum with small propodeal teeth; mesosoma length about 1.7mm: chocoense

30a. Frontal lobes strongly angular in face view; in lateral view frontal lobes strongly sinuous, with posterior portion upturned; mesosoma length about 1.9mm or greater: dentigerum

30b. Frontal lobes angular or rounded in face view; in lateral view frontal lobes evenly curved or flat, not upturned posteriorly; size variable: 40

40a. Mesosoma length about 1.7mm; scapes very long, extending far beyond vertex margin (Scape index 1.6); neck strongly developed; lateral margins of frontal lobes in face view rounded to gently angular, not appearing strongly inflated (cf. robustum): collare

40b. Mesosoma length variable; scapes shorter (scape index 1.5 or less); neck variably developed; shape of frontal lobes variable: 50

50a. Mesosoma length about 1.8mm or greater; frontal lobes in face view appear grossly swollen and rounded: robustum

50b. Mesosoma length variable but often smaller; frontal lobes not grossly swollen: 60

60a. Mesosoma length about 2mm; scape index about 1.3; lateral margins of frontal lobes angular in face view; ventral margin of postpetiole with a spine (known from one worker, possibly aberrant): JTL-015

60b. Mesosoma length less than 2.0mm; scape index variable; frontal lobes variable; ventral margin of postpetiole lacking spine: 70

70a. Mesosoma length 1.2-1.3mm; lateral margins of frontal lobes strongly triangular in face view; dorsal face of propodeum with pair of longitudinal carinae; propodeal spiracles somewhat projecting: goniodes

70b. Mesosoma length variable; lateral margins of frontal lobes rounded to weakly angular; dorsal face of propodeum with or without carinae; propodeal spiracles projecting or not: 80

80a. Propodeal spiracles strongly projecting; mesosoma length about 1.7mm or greater: 90

80b. Propodeal spiracles not strongly projecting; mesosoma length 1.3-1.7mm: pilosum

90a. Dorsal face of propodeum with prominent pair of longitudinal carinae; anterior clypeal margin with small median tooth: calverti

90b. Dorsal face of propodeum with longitudinal carinae lacking or very weak; anterior clypeal margin shallowly convex to slightly emarginate medially, with no trace of median tooth: JTL-013

Measurements

I made a few measurements to contrast size differences among the Costa Rican species, using the following variables:

Mesosoma length: from cervical carina (sensu Lattke) to posteriormost border of metapleural lobe.

Head length: in full face view, from anteromedian border of clypeus to posteriormost margin of head, not including constricted neck if visible.

Head width: in full face view, width of head in front of eyes (not including eyes).

Scape length: viewed anteriorly or obliquely, so that base of scape visible beneath frontal lobe, from most proximal margin of flange that joins very narrow neck and condyle to distal margin of shaft.

Scape index: scape length/head width.

Measurements are in millimeters.
