Identification- V. austriaca is yellow and black. The underside of its scape is yellow, as opposed to all black. This is the only species in the genus Vespula which has long erect hairs along the hind tibia.

Geography- This species has a holarctic distribution. It is found transcontinentaly in the boreal regions of North America.
Natural History (Akre et al., 1980)- This species is a social parasite of other members of the V. rufa species group.
