Identification- D. norvegicoides is one of the two yellow and black Dolichovespula yellowjackets in our area. It can be differentiated from D. arenaria by the markings of the genal area and the gaster. In D. arenaria the genal area is usually continuous yellow, where as in D. norvegicoides it is interrupted by black. The posterior margin of the first (and sometimes second) gastral tergum of D. arenaria is broken by black medially. In D. norvegicoides the posterior margin of gastral terga one and two is continuous yellow.

Geography- The distribution of D. norvegicoides is limited to North America. On the Pacific coast it is found from Central California to Alaska. It occurs transcontinentally in Canada and is found in the Northeast region of the U.S.

Natural History (Akre et al., 1980)- This species is less common than D. arenaria, which it looks similar to. Little is known about the biology of this species.
